Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

The American government has just enacted a very progressive piece of anti-discrimination legislation (think Gattaca). This comes as no surprise if you’ve ever compared the dates of anti-discrimination legislation in the U.S. to other modern companies. However the GINA might be much more progressive than it’s creators and supporters intended.

There is currently no federal law preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation. Claims are currently being made that homosexuality is genetic. If this claim is eventually proven our staunch Republican President might just have signed a federal law that makes it illegal to discriminate against homosexuals.

Of course there’s probably some loophole like having to call homosexuality a medical condition (hey it’s been done) and as my roommates points out there’s always amendments, but a girl can dream. Maybe someday we’ll have a government that actual follows their own anti-discrimination laws!

This is kinda, sorta, well, a great big, huge, monster IF. So far the jury is waaaay out on a genetic signifier for same-sex attraction that can be demonstrated to be a cause (let alone a determining factor) in persons being attracted to other folks of the same sex.

If a “gay gene” is out there, we are still a heck of a ways from isolating it and identifying it.
