These past few weeks have been Open Enrollment at our company. All employees need to turn in at least 4 pieces of paperwork. They were given two weeks and you can imagine what happened. Fifty percent of the paperwork came in the day before and day of the deadline. I’m sure part of this was because the week of the deadline I let all the Supervisors know exactly what each person owed me. By the time I left the office on Friday, the day of the deadline, 35 out of 130 employees still owed me at least one piece of paperwork. Sadly, this is typical no matter where you work. What happened next is what shocked me.
During the monthly Managers meeting that Monday my HRM informed the Managers of who the remaining 35 people were. I nearly fell out of my chair as I heard the Managers themselves calling each unit (all are off-site) to tell each person they needed to get their paperwork in. They did this immediately following the meeting. And they even threated to write notes for the employee’s personnel files if the employees didn’t get their paperwork in ASAP.
Here I was all set to have to fight this fight alone and there were the Managers not only backing me up but taking it upon themselves to speak with their employees. I don’t know if I should get used to this but damn it feels nice!
Why can’t Managers everywhere do this?
